Have you ever tried a Ride ‘n’ Tie ?

Well, here is your chance – on the Friday of the NorthWind Challenge weekend we will be hosting a 20 Mile Canadian Championship Ride ’n’ Tie and we invite you to come join the fun!

Talk to your provincial organization and get a Team together and come run with us. We will also offer a 10 Mile RNT for those that don’t feel quit up to 20 miles.

Here’s how it’s done

Two Humans and One Horse – the fastest team wins over a marked course anywhere from 6miles (10km) to 30 plus miles(50+km). It is a mass start, usually in an open area, horses with riders and runners lined up, the trail is opened and the excitement begins. As the trail narrows, care and consideration is needed. It is best if runners keep to the right, so horses and riders can pass on the left. Teams may stay together but it is faster if the rider gets ahead and ties the horse to a suitable tree, post or safe object. It is best if the horse is wearing a halter under the bridle with a good long cotton lead attached.

The rules are simple - Horses must be 5 years of age or older to compete. Each horse has a vet check at the beginning, middle and end of the race. For longer distances there is a vet check approximately ever 5 miles. Whoever rides the horse into the vet check must tie the horse and leave on foot for their partner who comes in on foot to have the horse vetted and then proceed on horseback after passing the check. Standard endurance vetting is used – Fit To Continue gets you your completion. Only one person can use the horse at a time, so no riding double and no tailing.

Ride ‘n’ Tie really gives you an appreciation and respect for the horse, considering the miles traveled over the varying topography. It is strategy, planning teamwork and stamina - a reason to get in shape, to be a better rider and to help your horse. Most of all it is to FUN. Try a Ride ‘n’ Tie !!!!
